5 Ways to Give a Family Room a Spring Refresh

Are you bored with the way your family room looks? Spring is the perfect time to give the room most often used in a home a new spark of energy. Here are 5 ways you can refresh your room for the new season.

1. Paint

Fresh paint is an easy, inexpensive way to breathe new life into a room. Give your room a spa like feel by incorporating the calm, cool colors of Spring. Everything looks so lovely beneath a light blue sky and will in your family room, too. We’re fans of powder blue ceilings and especially like the color Breath of Fresh Air (Benjamin Moore Color 806).

Not sure you want to repaint the entire room? Try just painting an accent wall. A darker, more brilliant shade of paint can be a focal point that eyes are drawn to as people enter a room.

2. Accessories

We’re talking throw pillows, rugs and art. Replace those dark colored throw pillows with new ones in energizing citrus colors such as lemon, lime and orange.  These colors give the illusion of juicy crispness. You and your guests will enjoy relaxing against these fresh cushions.

Give your feet a change of scenery, too. Change out your tattered area rug and replace it with a colorful, fun floor covering. Can’t find the perfect one? Then don’t replace it. This will open up the room and show off the flooring that was once hiding beneath your throw rug.

Update the art and family photos that currently adorn your walls. Framing photos and seasonal pictures is an easy way to update the feel of the family room. Use all the same color frames so the subject matter becomes more prominent. Consider displaying the photos in a new configuration.

3. Floor Plan

Rearranging the furniture in your family room will change the flow and energy of the room without any cost. Move the furniture in a way that will create conversational areas that your family and friends can gather in on a humid afternoon as they sip their lemonade. Chances are that when guests arrive and see the new layout, they will think that you purchased new furniture.

Rearranging the floor plan of your family is an easy way to update the feel of your family room. A redesign by a professional is the most affordable luxury.

4. Bring the outside in

Lessen the barriers of your walls and allow your family room to become one with nature. The addition of flowers and greenery to your family room will allow you to bring Spring inside. Fresh daffodils and brightly colored tulips not only bring nature indoors but can improve the air quality of your room, too. Orchids are another option that bring color, depth and freshness to a room. Most people shy away from this exotic plant, but they are very easy to care for as they only require lots of indirect light and three ice cubes a week.

Vases are most often used to home flowers indoors – but they don’t need to be. Think outside of the vase and experiment with other containers. Try an old handbag, it is sure to be the conversation piece of the room and a great way to get it out of the closet.

5. Slipcovers

Give the dark colored or slightly blemished furniture in your family room new life at a fraction of the cost of new furniture. Slipcovers are an inexpensive option. There are plenty of colors, patterns and fabrics to choose from. A creamy light or pale gray canvas slipcover will give your room a clean, Spring like feel. Now you will have a whole new ashen field hue upon which to add bursts of colors. BONUS…they are easily removable for cleaning.

Opt to refresh your room with one, two or even all five of these ideas to give your family room a seasonal update.
